There is a world of options available to cannabis consumers. For a newcomer it might be hard to know where to start, while seasoned smoker or vaper might be interested in branching out beyond joints and edibles. Our spread is abundant and we know you’ll find your favorites. To help you out, let’s start with the language of Root & Bloom! Cannabis terms are always evolving, and we want to be your guide to our in-house goods.
Bud
A synonym for “flower,” the smokeable part of the female cannabis plant. The bud is covered in trichomes which release cannabinoids when smoked.
Budder
Looks like butter but made from bud (get it?). Budder is a concentrate extracted with a solvent, high in THC, and whipped for an easy-to-use smooth consistency.
Cannabidiol (CBD)
A non-psychoactive compound (read: won’t get you high). CBD is often extracted for its therapeutic benefits, typically seen in gummies, oils, tinctures, supplements, extracts, food and beverages, sky’s the limit!
Cannabinoid
A natural occurring compound in a cannabis plant. There are over 110 (!) but the ones most people focus on for their own use are THC, CBD, and CBDA.
Cannabidiolic Acid (CBDA)
CBDA is a different compound from CBD, it actually isolates the CBD when you heat it. CBDA is often seen in raw juicing cannabis and can often be absorbed in tinctures, topical creams, and raw CBDA oil. May produce anti-depressant effects, the potential of CBDA is being heavily researched (stay tuned).
Cola
The flowering site on a female cannabis plant, aka the terminal bud. There is usually a main cola in the center and more smaller colas on the outside of the plant.
Crumble
One of the driest concentrates; made with a solvent like a shatter (see Shatter). It’s dry and crumbly and sometimes kind of looks like a honeycomb.
Curing
The process of drying a cannabis flower.
Dab
The vaporization of cannabis concentrates by applying them to a hot surface and inhaling.
Dab Rig
A dab rig is what you use to inhale extracts (see Dab). It’s a filtration device using water to diffuse vapor through small submerged holes and cools the vapor to a comfortable temperature before it reaches your lungs. You can also get an e-rig, which is a digital dab rig that you can program to your exact specifications.
Diamond (see Sauce)
How can something called “diamonds” (evoking a hard crystal rock) also be called sauce (evoking soupiness)? The sauce is what MAKES the diamond when live resin (see Live Resin) is extracted and THC crystals form. Perfect for dabbing or vaporizing. Served with or without sauce.
Flavanoid
A flavonoid is a naturally occurring chemical in cannabis leaves and flowers; flavonoids are also found in other fruits, vegetables, and plants. They have a variety of health benefits and can be anti-inflammatories and antioxidants among other things. Flavanoids found exclusively in cannabis are cannaflavins, and while they’re still being researched many are already appearing to be medically beneficial.
Flower
The smokeable part of the female cannabis plant.
Kief
When trichomes (see Trichomes) break off a flower, they become kief! Kief is powdery and sticky, kind of like pollen. You can collect it in grinders and add it to joints or make it into hash. No connection to Kiefer Sutherland.
Live
Anything “live” is extracted from a frozen flower rather than a dried or “cured” flower.
Live Resin
Awaxy cannabis extract with a high terpene profile (aromatic, flavorful, potent). The plant is frozenfor extraction rather than dried or cured (which can diminish the terpenes). Potent in THC.
Live Rosin
Oil extracted with heat and pressure (no solvents) from a frozen, rather than dried flower.
Live Batter
Live Batter is produced from live fresh frozen plant material (budder, on the other hand, is from cured material.
Dab Nail
A dab nail holds your concentrate in a dab rig (see Dab Rig), in a similar way to how a bowl holds your goods in a bong! You can buy them in titanium, glass, and quartz crystal (called a quartz banger) which is optimal to bring out the terpenes (see Terpenes) in your concentrate.
Nug
A manicured bud from a cannabis plant, a piece of the flower.
Resin
Sticky substance secreted by trichomes (see Trichomes) on a cannabis plant. Resin will also build up in a pipe or bong from smoking flower. Resin is also a concentrate extracted with solvents. Resin is extracted from dried flower, while Live Resin (see Live Resin) is extracted from frozen flower.
Rosin
Oil extracted without any solvents or chemicals to extract the concentrate, just heat and pressure. Rosin is extracted from dried flower, while Live Rosin (see Live Rosin) is extracted from a frozen flower.
Sauce (see Diamond)
How can something called “sauce” (evoking soupiness) also be called “diamonds” (evoking a hard crystal rock)? The diamonds are THC crystals and form FROM the sauce. It’s consumed by dabbing or vaping. Served with or without diamonds, and without the diamonds it has a consistency of apple sauce.
Shatter
Shatter is a solvent concentrate. Shatter is hard, brittle and glass-like. Shatter is consumed by heating it and inhaling the smoke, vaping, and adding it to food products. Shatter has a long shelf-life without diminishing in potency.
Sugar
A concentrate made from frozen plant material with THC granules that look like sugar.
Terpenes: terpenes are aromatic compounds found in all sorts of plants. There are high concentrations of terpenes in cannabis, that’s why it smells so SO good. Terpene content is higher in anything “live”
Terp Sauce
Concentrated terpenes in a liquid. It is often combined with solids and cannabinoid-rich concentrates and is the vehicle for aromas and flavors.
Trichome
Stalks located on female flowers. Trichomes produce resin that contains cannabinoids (THC, CBD, CBDA, etc).
Trim
Trim is snipped off after the harvest. It’s the pruned sugar leaves, bits of bud, trichome, and kief. Usually reserved for making hash and edibles.
Twax
Adding concentrate, wax, shatter, or other extractions to your flower in a joint.
Wax
A cannabis concentrate with very high levels of THC and waxy consistency. “Wax” can refer to lots of different types of concentrates extracted with a solvent (including Budder and Crumble). It can be dabbed, vaporized, sprinkled on a joint, added to a bowl, you name it!
